Standing Against Racism and Supporting our Communities

Statement from Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events:

London Marathon Events is appalled by the race riots and extreme violence on our streets and across the UK fuelled by racism, Islamophobia and the demonisation of migrants. Such hatred, violence and destruction have no place in our society.

On 21 April, just over three months ago, nearly a million people gathered on the streets of London to run together, to celebrate together and to raise millions for good causes together. The London Marathon is an extraordinary day of joy, celebration and emotion that brings together all the diverse communities of our society and shows the very best of humankind.

In these challenging times, we stand firmly with Black, Brown, Muslim and other communities, and all those affected directly and acknowledge the fear and uncertainty that these events may bring. Diversity, equity and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do. Our sports events and initiatives celebrate the richness of our multicultural society, bringing together individuals from all backgrounds to engage in positive and inclusive activities. We have a duty of care to everyone that interacts with our events to ensure a welcoming, inclusive environment.

Now organisations, individuals and groups are being targeted because of the colour of their skin and we need to stand up to speak up against hate and racism and be there for our communities, and challenge those that seek to divide us.

We urge everyone to stay safe, check in on your community, and provide support and solidarity to those visibly affected. Our priority is the wellbeing of our diverse communities, and we will continue to work closely with community leaders and organisations to support their invaluable work to increase participation in physical activity.

Our mission is to inspire activity – especially amongst diverse communities. This will not change. Together, we can overcome these challenges and build a stronger, more inclusive future. Look after one another and stay safe.
